The World Championship consisted of a small number of races that awarded Championship points, and from 1946 through 1983, additional non-Championship Formula One and Formula Two Grands Prix. In the 50s, the number of non-Championship events was substantial; many more than there were Championship events.
Privateer, Rudi Fisher, was the leader of the Ecurie Espadon, a team that was composed of a group of Swiss amateur gentleman racers. As privateers, the odds were always stacked against teams like Ecurie Espadon when titles were at stake, but the non-Championship races presented the opportunity for the non-factory teams to taste sweet success.
Rudi Fischer managed a pair of victories in the non-Championship races in 1952. More impressively, he muscled his way past some formidable competition to stand on the podium twice in 1952; once at the Grand Prix of Switzerland, and again at the Grand Prix of Germany. Behind the wheel of his 500 F2, Fischer was amongst the more impressive and successful of the privateers!
