Just one week after winning the Road America 500, and with the USRRC Championship already decided, the Type 2s were at the Bridgehampton 500 in Long Island, NY. This "500" was, unusually, a 500 kilometer race as opposed to the more typical 500 mile events.
Gearbox trouble in practice necessitated a cautious approach to qualifying and a 5th place starting position, behind a pair of Lola T70s and a pair of Ferraris. Wishing to keep prying eyes away, the entire team had whisked the gearbox away for a rebuild. After qualifying, however, the team was confident in the Type 2 once more.
#66 immediately put on the pressure, moving up rapidly right from the rolling start. Hansgen suffered a suspension failure in his Lola, moving #66 ever closer to the front of the field. Before long it had squeezed past Rodriguez's Ferrari and went on to win the race by more than a lap. The Type 2 was untouchable on the day!
