Porsche gave the beautiful new 910 (sometimes referred to, at the time, as the Carrera 10) its race debut at the 1967 Daytona 24 Hour race that has become a February tradition on the coast of sunny Florida. Factory regulars Hans Hermann and Jo Siffert showed good initial speed, but the engine used in qualifying wouldn't pull the full 8000 rpm it was supposed to and so white #52 qualified behind one of the Ferrari-entered Dinos and a factory Porsche Carrera 6 teammate.
From the green flag, a strong field of Ferrari, Ford and Chaparral prototypes engaged in battle. The fastest 2-liter cars hung back, eager to benefit from casualties at the sharp end of the field.
With the second hour complete, the Siffert/Hermann entry was easily leading its class when the Ford GT40 Mk IIs began dropping out with transmission failures! Hard driving and consistency into the evening and through the night saw the lone 910 climb up 4th place, but with a 2-liter Ferrari applying pressure. The Gurney/Foyt GT40 came back up through the field with a new gearbox to briefly take 4th place away before retiring for good.
Porsche scored the best result they could hope for: class victory with the brand new 910, followed home by the race-proven Carrera 6. Though the most widely published photos only show the glorious Ferrari 1-2-3 formation finish, the Porsche was right there at the checkered flag, ready to claim a step on the podium!
