Regular factory drivers Hans Hermann and Jo Siffert were looking forward to taking on the 7-liter Ford and Chaparral prototypes with their feisty little 2-liter Porsche 910. The pair debuted the new Porsche 910 by outlasting the big American cars at the Daytona 24 just 8 weeks prior, so hopes were high.
The #37 Porsche stuttered off the line and lost numerous positions, crossing the start-finish line in 31st place at the end of the first lap. With much ground to make up, Hermann/Siffert were more concerned about fighting it out amongst the 2-liter class than aiming for the top of the podium. The new 2-liter Alfa Romeo T33 embarrassed the factory Ford and Chaparral teams by leading the field at the end of lap one! With 29 cars between #37 and the class leader, including another Alfa and a quartet of Ferrari Dinos, Hermann and Siffert had their work cut out for them.
At the three-hour mark, Hermann/Siffert had worked relentlessly to claw their way all the way up to ninth place, two places back from teammates Patrick/Mitter in the #36 Porsche 910. The swift cars from Stuttgart ran like clockwork for the balance of the race, eventually finishing 1st and 2nd in the 2-liter class and a very impressive 3rd and 4th overall, beaten only by the 7-liter Fords!
